World Cup & Open Dutch Wheelchair Dance Sport

During the Easter weekend of 2022 the Open Dutch with the World Cup Wheelchairdancing are hosted during the Holland Dans Spektakel in Cuijk. Also the World Para Dance Sport International Competition of the International Paralympic Comitee will be held during this weekend. Recreational or topsport, for each level a competition. Accessible for everyone. The 2020 and 2021 edition are cancelled due the corona virus situation.

Corrie van Hugten and Hans Verhoeven joined their ambitions in 1989 by organizing an event where disabled dancers and abled dancers can participate as equal partners. Wheelchairdancing was growing tremendously in Holland and so were the annual competitions in Cuijk. It became a platform for international development in wheelchairdancing. Danceteachers from other countries who were known for their initiative skills were invited to the event to become more acquainted with wheelchairdancing. After widen this knowledge in their home country, many disabled children found pleasure in wheelchairdancing. This concept turned out to be very succesful. More than twenty countries are now participating in the World Cup wheelchairdancing in Cuijk. The amount of competitors and participating countries is still growing.

Noteworthy were the trips to Washington by invitation of the youngest member of the famous Kennedy family Mrs. Jean Kennedy for 'Very Special Art'.

Also the demonstration during the birthdayparty for Mr. Nelson Mandela in Pietermartizburg will be remembered. This party was dedicated to disabled children from underprivileged regions. After Corrie teached these children the Macarena, she handed over (unanounced) a birthday present to Mr. Nelson Mandela. You can imagine the hilarious commotion with the security.

Corrie van Hugten is thé pioneer of wheelchair dancing in the Netherlands, and an ambassador for wheelchair dancing worldwide. She has been fully commited to this sport for more than 40 years. Her effort has not been overlooked: She was awarded with the Dutch Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. And in 2018 - during the 30 year jubilee of the Holland Dans Spektakel, to which she has contributed a lot - the Brabant Danst Foundation wants to thank her for her immense dedication and would like to honor her with a special award: the Corrie van Hugten Award.

Anyway, we are looking forward to see all of you again for the 32nd edition in 2022 !
